Dolphin Kayak Tour Clearwater Beach Frequently Asked Questions
Please arrive 20 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time.
We look forward to sharing Clearwater’s wildlife, coastal beauty, and unforgettable moments on the water with you.
Do you guarantee dolphin sightings?
While dolphins are frequently seen on our tours, they are wild animals so sightings cannot be guaranteed. The waters around Clearwater Beach are home to many dolphins, and they are often spotted swimming, feeding, and playing along our tour route.
Is this tour family friendly?
Yes! Our guided dolphin kayak tour is family friendly and designed for guests of many experience levels. The calm waters around Clearwater Beach make it a great outdoor adventure for families visiting the area.
Is there an age requirement?
For safety reasons, guests must be 7 years old or older to participate in the tour. This helps ensure everyone can comfortably paddle and follow guide instructions while on the water.
Do we go onto Bird Island?
No. Bird Island is a protected wildlife sanctuary, so we respectfully observe the island from the water without landing. This helps preserve the nesting habitat for many coastal birds while still allowing guests to enjoy incredible views from their kayaks.
What wildlife might we see?
Guests often see dolphins, seabirds, rays, and occasionally manatees or sea turtles. When we paddle alongside Bird Island, you may also see coastal birds such as pelicans, herons, snowy egrets, white ibis, American oystercatchers, and the bright pink roseate spoonbills.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No experience is necessary. Our tours are designed for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Your guide will provide instructions before launching and help ensure everyone feels comfortable on the water.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. All guests wear U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets, and our guides are trained to assist guests on the water. However, guests should be comfortable around water.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes. For safety and equipment limits, kayaks do have a combined weight capacity. If you have questions about weight limits or accommodations, please contact us before booking.
Do you ever stop at a sandbar?
Depending on tides, weather, and conditions, we may stop at a local sandbar during the tour when permitted. These stops allow guests to stretch, enjoy the water, and take photos.
Where do we park?
Guests may park for a fee at Shephard’s Beach Resort, which is located near our launch area. Limited street parking may also be available nearby depending on availability. We are within walking distance to most hotels in Clearwater Beach so driving to our location may not be necessary. If parking is a concern, Uber or other ride share apps are an option.
What should I bring on the tour?
We recommend bringing a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a bathing suit and clothes that can get a little wet. Water shoes are also recommended for our occasional sandbar stops, but they are not required. We provide extras if needed. Water shoes, and other beach essentials can easily be found at nearby stores around Clearwater Beach including CVS and local surf shops such as Surf Style.
Can we hang out at the hotel after the tour?
Yes. Guests are welcome to enjoy Shephard’s Beach Resort after the tour. Many visitors stay to enjoy the restaurants, drinks, beach atmosphere, and live music that the resort is known for.
How long is the tour?
Our guided dolphin kayak tour lasts approximately two hours, giving guests plenty of time to paddle, enjoy wildlife sightings, and experience the natural beauty of Clearwater Beach.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is our top priority. If weather conditions are unsafe, tours may be rescheduled or refunded depending on availability.
Do we ever experience strong currents or winds during the tour?
Yes, this sometimes occurs depending on the tide, wind speed, and wind direction. Typically, however, we have calm conditions and hug the coastline to minimize the tidal currents that flow in and out of Sand Key Inlet daily.
When your tour ends, guests are welcome to continue enjoying the Clearwater Beach experience at Shephard’s Beach Resort, featuring outdoor dining, refreshing beverages, daily live music, and the largest outdoor beachfront stage in the state of Florida.
